Electricity: Our Best Friend And Worst Enemy

Homes and workplaces these days are filled with modern electrical appliances leading to hundreds of deaths each year and unquantifiable property damages as a result of electrical related problems and home fires. Electricity should not be feared but respected. The same electricity that runs our conveniences and appliances can shock, burn, or even kill. We need constant awareness and careful attention to maximize our safety in our daily dealing with electricity. Below are tips to assist you in relating with electricity:
  • Keep all electrical appliances away from water such as sinks, bathtubs, pools or overhead vents that may drip.
  • Do not operate any electrical appliance with wet hands, while wearing wet clothes or while standing in water.
  • Keep clothes, curtains, toys and other combustible materials at least three feet away from heaters, heating vents and other heat sources.
  • Do not plug too many appliances in one socket at once, which can overload the outlet and cause a fire
  • Do not plug high voltage appliance into a low voltage socket
  • Routinely check cords, outlets, switches and appliances for signs of damage. Do not use damaged electrical devices.
  • Never pass electrical cables under rugs or carpets.
  • Ensure that fuses or circuit breakers are always replaced with the correct size and amperage.
  • Always use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture.
  • Always switch off the light before changing the light bulb
  • Do not use extension cords on a permanent basis, and never use them with major appliances.
  • Do not pinch cords under furniture or in windows or doors.
