Many people hear, talk and even discuss safety but never go
further to find out what SAFETY really means. Using the letters that formed the
word SAFETY I will explain to you what safety is all about so that you can
fully take proper actions to make surroundings safe for both you and your
neighbours.
1. Search for Hazards.
Hazards are things that have the potentials to cause harm or damage and they
are everywhere. You have to take deliberate action to spot them out, you don’t
leave them to chance and luck
2. Analysis the risks
the spotted hazards pose to you or anyone that may come in contact with the
hazards – there is water on the floor (hazard) what may go wrong if some
unknowingly step on the water (analysis), there may be a fall (potential) that
the result of that fall may lead to death, permanent disability, minor injury
or no injury (risk)
3. Find the cause – it
is not enough to remove the hazard (clean the water) but to find out what
brought the hazard (water on floor). It may be there is a leaking tap or
someone poured it but did not wipe it. So finding the cause it to enable you
prevent recurrent after cleaning it.
4. Eliminate the
hazard. Don’t just leave it there by saying it’s not my job – you may be the
victim or your loved one. So clean it up – remove the hazard or call someone to
do and ensure it is done.
5. Tell others about
the hazard, the consequences, the cause(s) and how it was removed. By so doing
you are creating awareness so that next time anyone who sees hazard will take
appropriate action to control.
6. You are SAFE! When you identify the hazards, analysing them, finding out the cause(s), eliminate and
tell others about the hazards, that is SAFETY that what keeps you and your neighbours SAFE from harm.
