11 Sure Ways to Prevent a Kitchen Fire

Kitchen fires are devastating! You must have heard of one or more havoc kitchen fires have done to families within your neighbourhood and no one would want a repeat of such in his or her home.

Do you know that most fire outbreaks in homes started from the kitchen and that cooking is the main cause of the fires? It is not only that homes are destroyed but lives are battered and even lost at times.
It will not be your portion in Jesus Name – Amen! But whose portion? It will not be your portion if you will take heed to the following instructions:
1.      Never switch on gas cooker
without lighting – switching on the gas cooker without lighting it will allow gas to evaporate and circulate in the kitchen and any contacts of two metals or someone switching on the light or lighting the cooker will cause an explosion.
2.      Never leave your cooking unattended – stay in the kitchen whenever you are cooking – any type of cooking. If you are to be away from the kitchen, even for a second, turn off the stove, you may be carried away and forget the cooking.
3.      Check what you are cooking regularly and ensure you are done cooking and switched off the gas cooker before leaving – don’t assume.
4.      Do not wear loose cloths or cloth with dangling sleeves while cooking – your cloth may catch fire without your knowing it.
5.      Do not make or answer phone in the kitchen. In fact, don’t take your phone to the kitchen and warn all in the house never to bring your phone to you while in the kitchen even when a call comes – ask them to pick the call and tell the caller that you will call back
6.      Ensure that children are kept away from the kitchen – make your kitchen no go area for children
7.      To avoid heat generation, keep all flammables like wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains away from stove, oven or hot surfaces.
8.      Carry out proper housekeeping by clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent oil and grease accumulation.
9.      Have a fire extinguisher in or close to your kitchen and ensure that it is up to date and those that use the kitchen know how to use the extinguisher. Contact us if you need training on the proper use of extinguishers.
10.  Ensure that stoves, ovens, and any other cooking appliances are turned off before leaving home or going to bed.
11.  Install a smoke detector near but not in the kitchen. Use the test button to check it monthly. Replace the batteries once a year.
